Understanding Your Medical Deductible as a Trusted Clinician
We know that managing medical deductibles can be confusing—especially when you work multiple assignments throughout the year and have the flexibility to choose different benefit plans with each one.
Here’s the good news:
As a Trusted clinician, your medical deductible only resets at the end of the benefit year—December 31st. Any amount you’ve paid toward your deductible will carry over from assignment to assignment within the same calendar year, even if you select a different plan design or enroll in COBRA coverage between assignments.
How Deductible Carryover Works – Examples
🩺 Same Plan Design
You work an assignment from 01/05/2021 to 04/10/2021 and enroll in the Anthem PPO 500 plan.
You incur $800 in medical expenses during this assignment.
On your next assignment beginning 06/01/2021, you re-enroll in the Anthem PPO 500.
✅ Your $800 carries over and counts toward your deductible for the new assignment.
🔄 Different Plan Design
Same dates as above, but for your next assignment, you enroll in the Anthem PPO 2000.
✅ The $800 still carries over and applies to your new deductible, even with a different plan design.
🧾 Including COBRA Coverage
Between assignments, you enroll in COBRA and spend an additional $100 on medical care.
When your new assignment starts on 06/01/2021, you return to the Anthem PPO 500 plan.
✅ Both the $800 from your first assignment and the $100 from COBRA are applied toward your deductible.
📌 Reminder: Your deductible resets annually on January 1st. Any costs incurred after December 31st will start a new accumulation for the next benefit year.
